CON JOB IS HERE!
At long last, the next adventure of Spar Battersea, everyone’s favorite shit-kicking trouble magnet, is here!
“Broke, beaten, but undefeated, Spar Battersea finds himself working the local science fiction and comic book convention when things go from geeky to bad to insane. Wounded and haunted from the nightmare adventures of DEATH MATCH, Spar discovers that his first true love is at the convention, working as a model . . . and she’s gone missing. His hunt to find her at all costs sends him crashing into a world of amateur ninja vigilantes, smack-talking booth babes, and a megalomaniacal science fiction author who’s secret son might be the key to everything . Already at the brink and in need of a shrink, Spar grits his teeth and tries to survive . . . The Con Job. ”
BEHIND THE SCENES!
I created the Spar books for two reasons: to write gritty thrillers I’d like to read, and to write novels that would allow me to write about weird sub and pop culture topics I dig. DEATH MATCH was my ode to pro wrestling. CON JOB is both a love letter, and some hate mail, to comic books and geek culture. And what could be worse than sending Mr. Congeniality Spar Battersea into a giant science fiction and comic convention only six months after he barely escaped the nightmare of Mercy and Johnny Silent?
Indeed, one thing I wanted to make sure to do with these books was make the impact of the last books part of the first books. What I mean is, the scars heal, but they remain visible. Too often in thrillers and other kinds of serial fiction, you end up with heroes who fight for their lives in book one, and are back in fighting shape in book two.
Not Spar. No way. In CON JOB, he’s dealing with trauma. Sure, he’s dealing with it as only he can, by getting himself in a thousand different kinds of trouble, but the wounds of DEATH MATCH aren’t cold. . . they are hot. They are active. So even if his smart-ass mouth is still moving ten times faster than his brain, even if he is still the double-tough son of a bitch he always was, the weight of trauma is still on his back. In fact, finding a way to drop it is one of his key motivations.
Now ask yourself, when was the last time you read a thriller where all the hero really wants to do is scrounge enough money to see a shrink?
Now, how many of those books have ninjas?
Which is why you should buy the book!
So, will our hero hold all his marbles together as he seeks to find the girl who first broke his heart? Will he outwit the mastermind behind her disappearance and the vigilentes hot on his trail? Will he manage to keep his job while trying not to lose his shit?
